Latest Extension News

This is a very quick post to show the latest progress. Today we enter a new phase - roof building, so I wanted to get a post in before that. But not much time! Here are the floor joists for the upstairs room, doubled up and using high grade timber, in order to buy us two more inches of ceiling height downstairs... it’ll be worth it.

Here is the structure which supports one corner of the roof. A big beam sits in the little cut out bit at the top. The two triangles give lateral stability, and in fact the one that the beam actually sits on also transfers some of the vertical load. There are three other pillars to hold the roof but the others are just timber uprights (actually there are another two pillars, the ends of the steel beam I installed last June that you can see at http://greenstripe.blogspot.com/2009/06/steelwork.html)

Oh, you can also see the temporary flooring upstairs that I installed so I can work up there. And below is the state of the job right now. The vertical timber walls upstairs are all built, the front is clad with plywood (still need to do that at the upstairs side bit), and you can see the other side of the pyramid structure which gives some idea of how the roof will go.

Now must go and work on it instead of documenting it.
